Deran Gündogdu
We live in a time when many of us have become a bit too quick to dispose of our clothing after a relatively short period. Temptations in the form of textiles are everywhere, and the more of them we fall for and purchase, the more we contribute to the never-ending demand for new clothing. 'Use and throw away' reflects a culture that is quite misaligned with the intentions many of us have to give the environment a helping hand. That’s why we created the miniseries 'USE – AND DON'T THROW AWAY,' which offers good alternatives. Here, you’ll meet five of us who contribute to creating LAURIE, and hopefully, you’ll find inspiration for rethinking both your wardrobe and wardrobe responsibility. In other words, we give you an insight into how each of us activates a sustainable mindset when we feel the urge for something new in our wardrobe.
Goodbye to Overconsumption
The last woman in the inspiration seat is Finance Assistant Deran Gündogdu. Over the past 1-2 years, I have significantly limited my clothing purchases. I’ve intentionally scaled back because I had been overconsuming. My wardrobe needed to be minimized, and everything I sorted out I donated to people who can now make better use of it.
‘In my opinion, something appearing to be a good deal no longer justifies a purchase if the truth is that I don’t actually need this discounted piece of clothing.’ Do good deals always justify a purchase?"
One Piece of Clothing – Multiple Outfits
My new approach to clothing is to only buy based on need. For that reason, I avoid being lured by discounted items – something that seems like a good deal no longer justifies a purchase in my eyes if the truth is that I don’t actually need this discounted piece of clothing. Additionally, I’ve become better at considering how I can style my clothes in multiple ways, so that the variety of outfits increases – all based on the same piece of clothing.
I apply this approach both to my existing wardrobe and to any new additions.
